Caring for your skin

If you are undergoing chemotherapy:

  • Avoid all types of hormone creams such as corticosteroids, unless prescribed by your doctor.
  • Remember, exposure to the sun can increase the side effects of some chemotherapy drugs and should be avoided. Refer to sunscreen section.

You may want to consult with a beautician regarding the following techniques, which may improve the look and feel of your skin during treatment.

  • If you experience very dry skin, use mild soaps and lukewarm (not hot) water, or mild cleansing lotions or creams. A good moisturiser is essential. Apply it while your skin is still damp. Take special care of the delicate areas around eyes and lips.
  • Professional massage – the effect on skin is soothing and therapeutic.

If you are undergoing radiation treatment:

During radiation therapy, it’s essential not to wash off any skin marks your doctor or radiotherapist may have applied. Use clear, warm water instead of soaps and creams in treatment areas, patting dry very gently so the marks stay undisturbed. These marks will eventually fade away.

  • Do not expose treated areas of the skin to the sun during and after your treatment, and do not use sunscreen on treated area during therapy, without consulting your doctor.
  • If you experience itchy skin in the area being treated, consult your radiotherapist. Stay away from heavy lotions because they leave a coating on the skin that will interfere with your treatment and cause further irritation. Use a light, water-based lotion instead.
  • Your skin may become brown or reddish-looking during treatment, or develop some other changes in pigmentation or colour. These side effects almost always disappear after treatment. There are many cosmetic concealer products available if your doctor approves of their use.
  • Do not use any cosmetics, perfumes or deodorants on treated areas without checking with a radiotherapist.
